Design Values

An immersive experience has key values that help guide the design process. An interactive and comfortable design with quality sound and finish leads to a headphone design that is valued and well thought out in the end result.

Teardown

Understanding the inner workings of what a headphone is inspired the ideation process
as there was a better comprehension of individual components and overall form.

Form Inspiration

Curating a set of designs that embed a touch point into the design to draw natural attention from the user. Also, identifying certain curves, chamfers, and proportions that can be brought forward into the ideation and detail iteration process.

Ideation

Taking the previous inspiration to paper kept the ideas fresh and different. Maintaining the design values through the sketching process helped bottleneck ideas and keep the work grounded. The inspiration made it easier to get wildly different ideas down quickly.

In-Hand Ideation

Creating a library of iterative models streamlined the ideation process. Having physical models to demonstrate form and proportions cleared the path to a more rounded out solution. Designing with human dimensions in mind, the models also corrected the size of the cans to be more comfortable and accurate.

Detail Iteration

After getting to a modeled idea of a final direction, finding the right proportion of headband to can ratio was key to maintaining the realism of the concept. Working through details of each version helped guide the model to be more polished and overall more visually appealing.

Prototype Modeling

By fabricating full scale models, it allowed for a higher fidelity of conceptualizing the design. Also, testing and applying colors and finished proved to elevate the CMF rendering process. Shown are the assembled and disassembled models highlighting a satin black finish.

Elliptical Cans

The cans are inspired by concentric elliptical lines. A curved and pillowed exterior curve makes the touch interaction smooth and allows for a natural convex touch point.

Touch Point

The touch point is not marked as it already has weight to the design. It felt redundant to add another aspect to the dot as it already called attention to itself in a clear way.

Primary Colorways

A satin black paired with a matte gray offer a subtle look that impresses through form and sleek design. The finish and colors mimic the minimal surfacing to maintain a soft and smooth brand elements. The two colors contrast each other well, yet still highlight the form.

Human Factors - Fit

Modeling the headphones with appropriate proportions for the cans and the headband was important to the overall look and design of the headphones when they are worn. A comfortable and tight fit to the ear keeps the slim look of the cans.

Touch Interaction

The right can allows for multiple touch movements to control volume, music and podcasts, skipping and scrubbing, as well as vocal modes for conversation. The left can can do the same interaction movements as the right except for the actions surrounding the touch point.

Ports

Aligning with simplicity of the form, the headphones have a usb-c for charging, and an 3.5mm aux port for wired listening. The on/off button can be held tapped to play the battery life. It can be held down to pair bluetooth. The blue light means the headphones are paired.

On the Inside

The teardown proved vital in modeling the inner workings of the drivers, clam shell connection parts, the pivot parts, the headband construction, the driver housing, and the wiring throughout the headsets design. With mics, power, and aux ports, the teardown was helpful for placement.

In-Store Display

Often times, headphones are shopped in stores to get the best feel for comfort, style, and sound quality. Visually elevating and differentiating the exhibition of the Sone headphone colorways highlights the quality and form design.

Canvas

The display acts as a canvas for the headphones to pop out of. Via color and design, the display subtly contrasts against the headphones to elevate the design work and finish of Sone.

Head Space

The comfort and quality values are imperative to an impactful listening experience. Being immersed into sound requires a head space that allows the user to feel as if they are in their own world. Whether the mood is upbeat or mellow, the headphones provide a comfortable listening experience.

Elevated Design

The design values: interaction, sound, comfort, form, and quality, provide a sturdy foundation to maintain a sophisticated and elevated headphone design. Especially form, interaction, and quality are exhibited in the Sone headphone.
